Gray's vs. other kings?

utpike Dec 01, 2003 02:00 PM

i was wondering if there is any real difference between keeping gb kings compared to others. i have 2 california kings and am in the market for another snake. do they keep the same pretty much. i have heard that gb are more finicky eaters. i'm not sold on the grays or anything, just curious, and i'm not all that expercienced so if these are tough to keep then please talk me out of it.

From my experience and others, it seems that once you get them eating mice, they feed very well. When you read that they are finicky, it is talking about the tendency of hatchlings to only recognize lizards as prey. Some hatchlings are very difficult to turn over to mice as a food source. My reccomendation for you would be to go with the Gray-banded Kingsnake (if you like them), but get one that you know is feeding on mice regularly from a trustworthy breeder.

Agreed. They are kept in similar fashion as most colubrids. All the corns, rats and kings are kept in rubbermaids with some aspen in them.

If you need to know of alterna (GBK) breeders ask these folks in here. There are a few that post in this forum. They will also make sure you are getting a true alterna and not a hybrid (no difference in care or demeanor of a hybrid v pure...just me being a purist).

Hey....Go with the Gray's...You can't go wrong...I have about 35 snakes including kings, corns, milks, sand boas, and grays...Out of all me snakes I believe my grays are the sweetest of all my snakes. Take it easy.-ELvy
