Emerald tree boa keeper, Wanting to try something new??

Josephbrugh Dec 01, 2003 02:13 PM

Hello all,
I am an etb keeper, I would like to try another species of snake and i have been looking into BRB. The Question for all of you with ample experience is what am i getting my self into?
I have had much luck with the husbandry and breeding of etbs/atbs and i was asking specific info for caging requirements, Humidity, Sub-strait, the whole shabang. I wish to have the animal in optimal conditions, and i make mt own acrylic caging so that is not a problem. Basicly Tell me what i need to know, even post or email me pics of your setups.

thank you for you time

I think your getting yourself into another addiction. Be warned.
Your acrylic cages would be ideal for BRB's as long as you covered some of the sides to keep the light down, they are somewhat shy even as adults and very nocturnal. With your setup keeping the humidity up around 80% should'nt be a problem. They like to stay burrowed or sheltered during the day and you won't be seeing much of them; I use Orchid bark mixed with moss as a substrate with a thick layer of moss on top and stuffed in all the hides. They do like to roam about and climb so bigger is definitly better. I heat mine using incandescent night lights (blue not red) of varying watts to create a vertical and horizontal gradient between about 70 and 90 degrees. With a smaller setup you'll want to maybe bring the upper temps down to about 85-87. Mine spend the majority of their time in temps around 72-80 and use the upper levels to bask in at night especially after being fed. The female when pregnant spent long periods at around 88-92. They like to soak, especially after eating, so a big bath is necessary (my adults don't spend alot of time in the bath and I think that has to do with the substrate used).
If you get a juvi, keep it in a rubbermaid container until it matures some.
Your going to like BRB's, but you'll like them alot more if you can observe them.

That seems to be the ticket, thanks for the help paul.

my next question is i wish to obtain a top quality specimen, who or where is the best place to find one? I am only going for top notch animals because in the future i wish to breed them and my experiance with emmys has taught me that you need to get the cream of the crop to produce top notch animals. if you know of anyone that might let go of stock or that type thing.

thanks
j
