Vitamin Supplement / Sulcata

Shion Dec 01, 2003 03:21 PM

I am getting everything ready to purchase my sulcata, but wonder which vitamin supplements do other owners use and how often? How often also on the Calcium supplement? Once a week or more?

Thanks for all your help and advice so far.

I would suggest using cuttlebone for calcium (white thing they
sell for birds, if you don't know what it is, I can post a pic
of it even), scrape some of it off onto his food (light coating
of white powder) daily. You can keep a piece of cuttlebone
in his enclosure (remove the hard backing of it with a very
sharp knife, VERY carefully) if he might be inclined to nibble
on it, some do, some don't.

When my sulcata was small I used Repti-Cal calcium supplement
in conjunction with Herpti-Vite. They come in a blue and a red
small container. You only need about as much as a matchhead is,
maybe 2-3 times a week.

Have you considered adopting a sulcata that has outgrown its
current home (which seems to be before they're even 5 pounds)?

Equally important as providing calcium, is providing the lighting
they need to turn it into something useful for themselves.

Be careful to keep your sulcata warm and out of drafts.

The only thing I get in a pet shop is the Life Mate Hemp
bedding that I use. There's nothing else in a pet shop for
him at this point.
My Sulcata Tortoise Theodore (aka: Teddy)

There have been some sulcatas that react badly to timothy hay
as a substrate, getting irritated eyes and even respiratory
symptoms. Watch yours closely for this. I've use timothy
hay for food, and have used it as a hide bunched up in a
corner for the tortoise to burrow in. I wouldn't use it
all over the enclosure as the only substrate though. You can
if you want of course. I would suggest getting Life Mate
100% natural hemp as your primary substrate for a sulcata.
Mine's 61 pounds and I still use it.

sold for birds, scrape the white powder onto his food for calcium.
