Weird Auratus Issues

milinar Dec 01, 2003 06:12 PM

Hey everyone,

I have a young bronze auratus with some strange issues.

It seems more skittish than the others, prefering to hide more. There is a very noticeable difference in it's activity level.

It sometimes flails around as if it was in pain when I spray water on it, and sometimes when I dump fruit flies in and they on the frog.

Today, most distressingly, it laid down in a very unnatural position, with it's head on the ground and one leg kinda sticking up in the air. It stayed there without moving for a few minutes, and I though maybe it had died. But it sprayed the frog with some water and it sat back up like nothing had happened.

Two things:
1) Its skin seems a little more wrinkled than the others, but there is plenty of humidity (90% 24/7)
2) The frog still eats copiously, and seems to be "fatter" than the rest of my frogs.

I wonder, then, could he be impacted, or otherwise constipated?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Dan,
Some if not most frogs don't like to be sprayed directly, so try spraying around them. Also, try to place food in a certain spot everyday instead of where he is, that way the ff are not all over him. Both things will stress the frog. How long had you had this frog in its enclosure? Maybe getting use to the environment. The frog will eventually know when feeding time is and go to that spot when hungry. If he is impacted, they will usually stop feeding, but will not loose size, so he probably is not (my guess only). Try these things, if you haven't already and see if it will help.

Oh, I wanted to add that I have a pair of cobalts that the female will crash around when I spray just before she is about to breed and lay eggs. Most of the time she don't mind as much, so yours maybe the same, since it is getting bigger with eggs?

The frog seems too small to be carrying eggs, but I guess it's possible. Today it seemed to have lost some of its "bulk", but did it's "twitching" thing again, where I sprayed the tank and it hopped away, but layed down weirdly and twitched on it's stomach, with one leg up in the air. It seemed to be breathing hard, and I saw movement in the abdomen area.

It's very weird.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, sounds like a fecal sample might be in order. The frog may be reacting to discomfort from parasites. Also, check your supplementation routine, and your vitamins. Are you oversupplementing? Undersupplementing? Using old supplements? Check all that but find a vet in your area who is willing to do a fecal on frogs to look for parasites. ITs possible that the frog might just be acting "weird" (mine sometimes do), but Id isolate it and check the above just to be sure, especially if its a new frog.

Yes, that does not sound right; have it checked out if you can. Good luck.
