Getting a gecko...

beardielover13 Dec 01, 2003 06:36 PM

Well, the people on the chameleon forum told me to get a gecko instead of a chameleon. What size tank would 1.5 need? How many babies would I end up with? I already have 2.3 bearded dragons and know about the males being housed alone. Do they eat mainly mealworms? Could I feed them the mealworms I breed for beardies? Thanks.

hi,

i know that 1.3 leos do alright in a 20gal long, i'm not sure how many more gallons after that. i only have 1 leo & don't plan 2 breed, so i don't know the tank size answer and the babies answer.

but, i do know that leopard geckos can do fine on a mealworm diet. you can toss in supers, crix, and silk worms if u want to add variety. if you want to feed a wax worm (as a treat), give ONE every week / every other week to prevent addiction & refusal of other foods. but mealworms make a great staple diet. (pls remember 2 gutload / dust!)

similar to beardies, males shouldn't be housed together.

good luck & i hope u get more answers soon! take care

Thanks. I will hopefully be getting some geckos soon. Another question... I am very interested in bearded dragons genetics. Do geckos come in the wide variety of colors like dragons? Would I be able to test genetics with them?

Hey!

Yes, if you do a little bit of research on Leopard Gecko Phases/Morphs, you'll realize they come in many, many colors.. from tangerine to pure white.

Here is a site that shows only a fair amount of phases of leopard geckos, it unfortnately has no picture of a blizzard, but they are my favorite, along with snows! You'll see what I mean! Just keep researching them and their favorites and you'll end up with a favorite morph! Take care and good luck!

Click on.. "View leopard geckos" at the top menu. They offer a nice variety of leos and they show pictures of many phases. Have fun.
