EGG FEEDING QUESTION

blue_tegu Dec 01, 2003 06:53 PM

i want to start my blue on some eggs, but i'm not exactly sure of how to do it. I know theres not exactly a concensus either (too cook or not cook) so any advice and why you prefer that way would really help. thanks!

oh, if i do need to cook them, how do i do it, and how should i present the egg, smashed or whole, or what not?

I have hens so I feed my tegus raw eggs because I know they are really fresh, little chance of salmonilla. I wash the outsides of the eggs with antibacterial soap. the tegus love to carry them around, and learn to neatly poke a hole in the top of the egg so that they can lick out the contents without spilling any of it. It is hilarious to watch.

If I am feeding them questionable or storebought eggs, i like to break it open onto a small dish and microwave it for about 30 secs. so that it is a soft poach with a runny yolk.

One time I fed my blue a cut up hardboiled egg yolk, and I've never seen him have such a hard time trying to swallow something. Got milk? they prefer runny yolks cause they go down easier.

I fed my 15 inch tegu a boiled egg. I just chopped it up in small pieces.

He actually completely skipped the yolk and ate only the whites (Could have just worked out that way though.) It was actually kind of funny to watch. He'd grab it and shake it more than he shakes anything living (Crickets, superworms) and only a tiny portion would make it into his mouth, the rest would fly every where.

I'm not going to give him raw eggs until he's big enough to handle a whole egg.

I would not feed un cooked eggs to tegus . Boiled or cooked only . Also dont feed that often . Mabye 1-2 times a mounth only . They are not very much nutrition in them . I only use eggs to sent fruit with. . Thanks Russ

I typically feed eggs faw in a small bowl. I sometimes feed cooked eggs when I have left overs from breakfast. I occasionally add fruit. I only feed eggs as part of a diet.

In the summer my tegu goes into an outdoor pen. Then he gets wholes eggs. The egg cracking behavior is nery interesting. To add some extra enrichment (stuff to do) hard boil the eggs and really make him work for it.
