Questions about shelf liner and brumating....

-ryan- Dec 01, 2003 08:06 PM

First the important question. Sidney just started brumating (sort of, he was out for part of today but went back into it in the afternoon). I am slightly concerned because the last time he went to the bathroom was last weekend, but he ate some crickets the day after and then started brumating shortly after that. So basically, he still has some partially digested food in him he hasn't passed, and I was wondering if it would cause a problem during brumation.

Now to the shelfliner questions. I was thinking about only using sand in the winter (so he can get more comfy and dig when he brumates), so for the rest of the year I would probably use shelf liner or some sort of similar product. I was a little worried he might hurt himself with shelf liner because sometimes he jumps from the high part of his branch which is about 20" from the cage floor. With sand it's no problem because it acts as sort of a cushion, but I was thinking that with the shelf liner he might hurt himself. Have any of you had problems with beardies hurting themselves by jumping off of a high branch? If I do decide to go with the shelf liner for part of the year, where do I get it? Would walmart have it?

I'm still deciding. I like the natural look of sand, but it seems like it's a struggle to walk through (imagine walking on the beach). I've tried pretty much every other substate, except dirt or a combination of dirt and sand, but that seems a little messy and too dark in coloration for a bearded dragon enclosure.

thanks in advance

The liner I use is spongey/soft. I don't think your dragon could get injured.
I have one dragon brumating under his shelf liner. It's the older liner, not the new spongey stuff. I guess he thinks it makes a good blanket. He's laying on the glass underneath and this is all I can see of him..lol
