Looking for a Tiger salamander

Shido Dec 01, 2003 09:05 PM

Hey. I am looking to buy a pair of tiger salamanders (The sex is not important) I've been looking for a long time with no luck. The only reptile store I trust can't get them. Also I want to know the size of tank I can house both comfotably through life.

Also if anyone could post pic of their setups it would be greatly appreciated. Any good websites with care sheets would also be good, not alot of websites with good info.

-Thanks-

This website is for questions and concerns. Want ads may be placed in the classifieds for the appropriate cost, or you can use other sites like caudata.org to post want ads for free.

Kingsnake in their terms of service say anyone caught using the forums as a classified can be removed from their system. Just thought I should warn you.

I don't know what part of the country you are from, but here in Colorado, tigers are pretty easy to find prowling about on rainy nights during more temperate seasons. I adopted mine after someone put him in my mailbox as a prank in August. When I went to the local pet store to purchase supplies and find out how to take care of him, they told me that they had one for sale (very cheap for such a beautiful creature!), after an employee found it behind the store.

I don't have any advice for you on how to find one during the winter, as I am sure they are all hibernating.

You also asked about habitats - the following is a photo of my set-up. I have learned on this forum that I am not completely kosher yet, but my salamander seems pretty happy so far. He's healthy, is growing, interacts well with me, and is a lot of fun to watch.

When I took the picture a little while ago, I was worried that the flash from my camera would traumatize him, but he can be seen peering out from his coconut hut in the shot. It seemed to energize him, rather than frighten him.

I bought mine from the classifieds here on Kingsnake. They came really young, but have turned out to be a female and male. Here's a picture of their enclosure, it's actually an older pic I'll try and take a more recent one for ya. It's a 20 gallon long (don't think it will last their life as they get very large), they have a house on the left side (the female is on top of it in pic) and a swimming hole on the right. I have some large stones around the inside of the swimming hole to help them get out of the water easier. I mixed organic soil (from Home Depot) w/RainForest ?? (can't remember the exact name, but it's the mix that's soil from the petstore). The plants are all real. They both seem to really like it. I mist the soil every day to keep it moist, it helps when they borrow too.

Good luck!

ThatPetPlace has them from time to time also, but I've never checked prices. If you call their 800 number you usually have to leave a number and it can take a day or so for them to get back to you. Otherwise call the toll call number and someone can assist. Just their rules. I should think that this is not the best time of year to get them, but also keep checking the classifieds. The best of luck to you!
