regular light bulb VS reptile heat bulb

kephy Dec 01, 2003 10:39 PM

I've used both, and as long as I acheive the same temps in the cage, what is the difference besides price? Are there any major benifits to buying the heat bulbs made specifically for reptiles? I do have a UV light as well so I'm just talking about heat lights here.

nope, doesnt make a damn bit of difference (for daytime bulbs anyawys). for a buck fifty, you can get a 100 watt bulb that works just as well. just try to get a clear (not frosted white) bulb

What does the clear bulb have above the frosted bulb? Does it just produce more heat? I find that it takes a 200 watt frosted bulb to get the temp 90-100 degrees. I haven't tried clear. Would I be able to get the same heat from a lower wattage bulb if it doesn't have the frost on it, or is there something else I should know?

ya know, i never really thoguht about it, i just took another beardie lover at their word. but id imagine it probably does give off both more heat and light. my bulbs are pretty close to the basking spots, but i find a 100 watt clear bulb is plenty sufficient. its not like the clear bulbs are 4 times the price of a clear bulb *shrug* if you look at a reptile bulb, theyre not frosted either, right? (i dont have any left to check, just clear and mvb heh)

Well, a frosted 200 watt bulb is about $2.50, and you only get one in a package. A clear 100 watt bulb costs less, and I think sometimes comes in packages of two. So while it's not a huge difference, I could probably save a buck here and there if I got the 100 watt bulbs.

I think the main difference is that I'm not dropping $12 on special reptile bulbs. Everything else is cake.
