cocooning

dunlax072 Dec 02, 2003 12:07 AM

I have some silkworms that are quite large now, not quite spinning size, but i have one spinning right now that is only about half grown. The cocoon is almost done, but he's only about 2 inches long, maybe less. Will he still turn into a moth? because even my larger ones (about 3 in) aren't spinning yet. Not really that big of a deal, but i was just wondering why he is so confused, and if he'll still turn into a moth. thanks

It depends.
Silkworms flush out the fluids in their system before they spin. So, their bodies will look a lot smaller than the rest of your other silkworms.
But, some silkworms flush too early, and spin too early. Before they have taken on enough body mass. The little guys will most likely die once inside the cocoon, never to emerge.

If I catch one starting the process to early, I feed it off right away.
