Would you adopt a boa?

RioBravoReptiles Dec 02, 2003 07:24 AM

I'm thinking of putting up a page on my website for Boa adoptions. We frequently get people wanting to dump stuff here and sometimes also have some boa that might be small or not an agressive feeder and we give up on it after a year or so.

My question is, would you guys (and gals!) here on the forum or other relatively knowledgeable keepers want to adopt a boa. I mean we all know that it is easy to give stuff away, but the point is to give these animals a good chance with people who care, not dump them into a bad situation or have them end up in the classifieds the next day!

I need your input on this...

Thanks!

Yes, I would adopt a boa...in fact, I have adopted several snakes in need of homes over the years. I believe there are a number of good keepers out there who would add an unwanted animal to their collection. I would also think it would be necessary, like so many rescue groups do, to have a screening process and adoption contract. Not everyone who wants a boa is necessarily fit to have a boa. Good luck in your endeavor...I think it's great that you're considering doing this.

there is an adoption section in the classifieds that I recently became familiar with and there is a group in there that has a few boids for adoption....seem to have their act together...check them out, maybe you can work with them as they are already established....they have adoption fees which kinda seems almost like sales to me, but most if not all adoption agencies have some sorta fee.....nothing is ever truly free. Best wishes to you wherever you go with your thoughts on this one....I've seen a couple of your boas I'd love to adopt.

I have one Mexican Boa now that is a "rescue" case. The original owner routinely left live rats in the cage until the snake was "ready." She received numerous bad wounds as a result of this care. Her first shed showed 40 scars from rat bites. Since March she went from 14# to 20# and she's active and happy.

You know......One of those things I think about if I won the lottery. I would love to take in rescues and try to give them the best life I could. They deserve and need love. I would buy hundreds of Ronne cages............And become "crazy" snake man.

I only wish I had adopted one before I purchased mine! Either way, my girl is a beauty, and eventually I hope to provide her some company.
