how long do kingsnakes live?

lizberzins Dec 02, 2003 09:08 AM

just curious. i have a friendly, healthy 6 year old (non-hibernating) CA king snake. I am looking for a new home for her only b/c I have 2 small kids and do not have enough time to take her out and play with her regularly.

does anyone know where I could post a classified ad to sell/give her up for adoption?
I tried to post one here but you have to be a registered shelter.

I've talked to people with 30 year old kingsnakes.
Kingsnakes do not need to be played with, and they'd be quite happy in captivity if no one ever picked them up. Handling is a bonus for YOU. This is all given that the cage is a relatively decent size so the snake can exercise itself if it chooses.
I have three pet snakes who have never felt the touch of a human hand. They're doing quite ok.

that makes me feel a little better. I had a FL king snake when I was a kid for 10 years, and she got plenty of exercise b/c I played with her all the time.
I have a 2 year old and a new baby, and my 2 year old is really too little to play with the snake, and I don't have much time these days, so she doesn't get handled much. I guess I always just felt guilty about it.
The aquarium is really nice - Oceanic is the brand, I think. I don't know the gallons but it's about 2ft by 2ft by 2ft. Do you think that's enough space? She has stuff to climb on, but doesn't do much. I guess I was afraid she was depressed or something...

That sounds like an awesome cage.
Their activity levels might vary between individuals. I have a blotched king and she is lazy as all get out. I have to dig her up and put her ON THE MICE before she'll eat, otherwise she'll let them sit in her cage all day and go bad. Even when I get her out she just tends to sit there after a bit.
