Twin-spotted Ratsnake

mmark Dec 02, 2003 10:12 AM

Hi all!
My girlfriend got a new snake today. It's a real grouch, and will strike at anything that moves. It's also green, so it instantly got the name 'Oscar'.
Apparently it's a Twin-spotted Ratsnake (see attached link). I'm interested in finding out a bit more about her (the snake, not my girlfriend) so any advice will be gratefully recieved.

Thanks!

Your ratsnake looks like a bimaculata alright. It's probably fiesty because it's an imported snake, maybe caught as an adult. CB aren't like that, much. Watch out for parasites if it's w/c.

Also, your snake appears to be of the brown phase, not green, unless it doesn't show up on the picture. If it is green I'm offering to buy it right now (contact me). For more info, ask your girlfriend where she got it and what other info she has about it. Keep it in a quiet place, not too warm, maybe in the 70 to 80 deg. F. range. Keep fresh water available, and offer small mice, live or thawed, whatever it will take.

Remember, it might want to hibernate this time of year also. Luck....

She's not a bright green, but certainly more green than the photo makes her out to be. It wasn't taken under the best conditions, and she does look more brown there than in real life.
What's up with the green variation? Is it rare or something?

Ah, thank you. We have her a little too hot at the moment (closer to 28c than 20c) Apart from that, I think we'll treat her like any other corn snake, and try to get her used to people.

She's been bred in captivity, but apparently the previous owners didn't quite realise how to pick a snake up without frightening the poor thing silly, so we've got a bit of work to do.

Thanks for the help!

There's a new photo up now:

Is she green, or brown? the second photo shows her colouring more accuratly than the first.
