yes, you may now call me genius...

...I have an ingenious solution to the soil-eating dilemma. Luna, without fail, would always go down to the pot for her dose of “whatever she could get her tongue on” in the evening – this sometimes included an attempt at a rock! I had used the screen/stone remedy but while I was setting up my silkworm with their plastic canvas “floor”, I thought….hmmmm.

I bought black, cut it to fit perfectly in the Ficus pot around roots, etc. made sure they overlapped and then held in place with blue paper clips. Why blue? Well, my thinking is that red, green, yellow, white or silver may attract her whereas she will encounter little in nature that is blue so (hopefully) will not want to shoot.

This is such a perfect solution because:
1 - water gets in and b/c the soil can breathe you eliminate the fungus gnat problem.
2 - plastic will not rust
3 - plastic does not CUT you like regular screen or hardware cloth
4 – it is cheap
5 – it was incredibly easy to do!

So, I expect you all to refer to me as 'lele the genius"

Lele-

Is this canvas plastic or cloth? Cloth will rot/mold so I am assuming it is plastic. Just when you said canvas makes you think cloth. Are you using the black ground cover plastic? The stuff you put down when landscaping with rocks/wood chips to keep weeds out. That plastic will allow for air exchange better then solid plastic. Why am I telling you this, you know what I am talking about!LOL! Good idea with the plastic, you may even think about making a small tarp around the pot if you are having problems with over watering with your dripper/mister causing the roots to root. I.E. with Ficus trees! Hope this helps!

John

Plastic canvas is plastic and is used in crafts. They typically come in 8"x12" sheets with seven squares per inch. Here is a pic of it in a pothos. I currently have a couple of her plants raised up on a 10gal. tank upended and put the "canvas" along the sides so she can climb up it and not see her refection...I just haven't found the right "table" yet and this is actually working quite well. I'll take pictures of her whole setup later on.

Hi "genius"

Great idea! Much more sophisticated than the upside down paper plates we use. But then we needed a quick, cheap solution. Other times, I used fiberglass screening.

Haven't had to use anything for a while - but I will your idea in mind. Too clever!
