Another ? on temp gun usage and thermostats

geckoGirlsMom Dec 02, 2003 01:44 PM

Thanks (to Marcia I think) for the answer I got earlier on where I should be doing my temp gun measurement. I have yet another. I wish to measure right near the floor. Do I point it straight down, or from the middle of the cage, point it in the warm direction to get the measurement?
Sorry if this is tedious. Here is why I ask.
When I point it straight down, I get measurements of about 105 degrees. This is true even though I have a UTH with a Zoo Med thermostat set in the "low" range, which in THEORY should be keeping my warm side significantly cooler than that. Maybe it's my thermostat that's not functioning properly.
Slinky does spend most of her time on the warm side of the tank and she doesn't seem uncomfortable so that tells me it must be at least close to the right temp. But her eating and pooping is off and she seems lethargic and anti-social. I want to make sure it's not the temps and is only the season.
Thanks for any help.

On a similar note, has anyone been noticing more hiding/napping in their geckos in the past week? We've been getting much cooler temps here (in Ontario Canada) and even a few inches of snow last night.

This week I've noticed a lot less activity. Even with the temps staying pretty steady in her tank. Can they 'sense' winter? Maybe it's just the air temp dropping a couple degrees in my house yesterday, but something seems to be triggering her 'hibernate/nap/hide' mechanism.

I've heard 'brumation' mentioned in reference to Beardies, is there some sort of gecko mini-hibernation?

Typically leos will sort of hibernate, however this is usually an induced hibernation so that they will enter the breeding period when the breeder wants them to. Also, geckos will sense winter because although their cage temp is normal, the ambient lighting from windows gets darker earlier.
