So um..

A loss of tail isn't exactly a bad thing, right? I've cought small lizards (No idea what they were) that detached their tails, but nothing of the size of a tegu (Even if it is..er..was..15 inches, right?)

I was taking pictures of him and he decided to walk under this shelf. I went to try to get him (Completely unaware that Tegus would drop their tails) and I managed to get ahold of his tail...and nothing else.

I completely freaked out and searched the forums for other posts, and I guess it's rare, but does happen, and it usually grows back.

I feel like such an ass now. Going to keep him in a seperate enclosure with just paper towel as substrate until it's no longer an 'open wound'

Your not an ass just a mistake, never done it my but know people who have it will rejuvenate but it wont look the same i dont think it puts any other permenent damage on the lizard though. you may want to get some other suggests. good luck
