Burms and a puppy

JDP Dec 02, 2003 03:02 PM

OK, I am thinking of getting a puppy dog but Im wondering if there are any issues of having burms and a pup/dog in the same house? Anybody have experience with this? Any thoughts are helpful!
Thanks.

Just keep them separated. If you try to get them used to each
other, it could hurt the burm's feeding response. I always kept my burms/snakes away from my dogs. No use in them interacting unles you want to put on a circus show or something.

I never had any intention of bringing them together. Im more worried about a dog scent and handling the snake. I dont think snakes really associate dogs as food but its a consideration. Anybody actually have dogs and snakes in this ilk?
Thanks

I have a 5 year old rottweiller and a 6 month old burm. I bring my burm around the dog, and the dog sniffs her and licks her, and they smell eachother.

But I've seen your burm, thats a big one. I wouldn't bring them together, but I would be cautious about washing your hands or having clean (dog scent free) clothes when handling your snake. The dog scent in the air shouldn't be a big deal if you don't bring them close to eachother.

Good Luck

I would think that would be highly dangerous for either the snake or the dog or both. I have two little dogs, and they never get around my snakes, not even the ratsnake I have -- much less my burm. Big snakes do see dogs as food, and there are tons of reports out there of snakes eating other pets. I don't think it's ever a good idea to allow snakes and other pets to be around each other. Little good can come from it, and lots of bad can result.

I have never had any problems with my boas with cats and dogs. I still wash my hands before I will pick up the snakes just in case though.

Past that.......They never really see one another. I keep them seperated as much as possible.
Hope this helps.

I could see one problem that is the smell of the dog since the snake never smelled that before, I had my dog before my snakes so when I picked them up I smelled like the dog my floor smells like the dog, and so on, but as the post said above just wash your hands and eventually the snake will associate the smell of dog with you, and wont be a problem. But maybe someone had a big snake and then get a dog. Good question.

A guy that does my tatoos had a tic and he tried to feed it puppies. Not anything to do with me. and he said that it was scared to death of the puppy. The puppies still had closed eyes. Maybe the strong smell of the puppy was to much. But I wasn't so it could just be BS.
