My first baby!!

tjw Dec 02, 2003 06:20 PM

I went in to check my animals this morning and found a baby!!
My group is 2.1.0 and are very aggresive. All towards me and not at each other. I pulled the baby to be safe. Now I am wondering if I should put it back, or raise it seperatly or keep it with the mom and pull the males?????
Any advise woul;d be appreciated.
Thanks Tom

if the adults are not agressive toward the baby, you should leave it with them.

Kim,

Just thought I'd say hello. I hope all is well. Sherri and I are getting ready for the big move-The LEE/1, LEE/2 merger.

I would second that- unless there is a concrete (aggression toward the baby or sick baby) reason to pull the baby, I would leave it in. You might want to mist the area the baby is in for droplets to drink, and place food (smaller chopped) and small shallow water dish close to where it is hiding. Weigh it NOW and every other day or so to monitor for weight loss. It will probably not eat for the first few days while it resorbs yolk- most of mine have started eating between day 3 and 7. They will drink water droplets on day one- the babies always seem very thirsty to me. Check the umbilical area for anything unusual (open, anything bulging out, wet or smelly) and see your vet if anything looks wrong to you.
I also set up a second heat source where baby and mom are hanging out until they climb back up to the normal areas.
cheers and congrats- Jes sb

Hello Jess,

Well put as always. I just thought I'd mention I have witnessed one neonate eat at day 2 but your 3 statement is otherwise the norm. I might also add in addition to weighing (Which is THE most important measurement), one should also measure length at birth and at various stages to compare growth to establish norms posted. As an assurance, in case additional helpful bacteria from the mother is needed, I leave a turd or two in the enclosure for a couple of days. I have never witnessed coprophagy from the neonate but I take the extra precaution.

I hope your pregnancy is going well.

Sincerely,
Brian

Thanks for the kind thoughts- my pregnancy is cooking along pretty normally...
I too have never seen a baby PTS eat adult feces, but I do the same thing (leave the bottom a little messy for a few days), partially in case there is some beneficial coprophagy and partially because I may be charged by a protective mom...
