Next question. Is there any way of determining the age of a Tegu with any degree of certainty? I'm guessing that my Argentine B&W is between 8 months - 1 year, but I'm only GUESSING. He is 18" long (including tail), the only sign of the green coloration remaining is a slight green tint on the top of his head,he currently eats both meat products (tuna, turkey, etc.)and fruit/vegi's (banana, avacado, etc.)

Usually they're really young when they're that small and still have some green color. How long have you had him?

I've only had him for about five weeks. I bought him at a local reptile shop. They seem to take good care of the reptiles and all the reptiles appear very healthy. Can you tell me how important age is when it relates to taming?

18" is not much. Guess he is approx. 4 month. I bought a female B&W Tegu from last year, she is 2.5ft..

From my point of view it isn't necessary to touch young B&W Tegus all the time.. They calm down and tame from selfe when they reach 2 feet..

you can feed tegus tuna? straight out of the can? is this good and if so how often?

littlerooster Dec 03, 2003 09:37 PM

I feed my Tegu tuna; straight from the can,at room temp. I get the Lite Tuna, packed in water. He eats this approx. once a week, and he seems to love it! True, I am a newbie when it comes to Tegu ownership, but what could be considered unhealthy about tuna? If anyone has info to the contrary,PLEASE,set me straight!

Hi,

My male arg b/w was just born during the summertime, and is now 26 inches long, when I bought him in august he was only 16 inches, and around 3 months old. Hope this scale helps.

ps) here is a pic of Amigo at 16 inches for reference.

Sounds like your little one is only a few months at best. They typically lose their green coloration at about 14-16" long. Also with regards to diet, make sure you are using the meat products you mentioned as a SUPPLEMENT to whole animal foods like crickets, superworms, roaches, pinkies/fuzzies etc. It's very important to keep the bulk of the animal food in their diet in the form of whole organisms. Best of luck with your little one. By the way, my male B/W is right at the 36" mark now and I bought him on June 6 at 14" long. They grow REALLY fast when kept correctly. Billy
