ribbon snakes

zoozy Dec 03, 2003 01:39 AM

Hello! First time poster! I have two male western ribbon snakes I adopted last year from a girl who got them from a petshop a year before that... so they are just over 2 years old!
I don't want to voilate the rules here, so I am wording this carefully... I am curious as to where other people got their ribobn snakes? I know people don't seem to captive breed... did everyone get theirs from petshops? or from friends like i did?
Also, what are your set-ups like? For water I have a medium sized fake rock water dish about an inch deep and I worry that I should have more water for them.

Thanks!

Hi, I am pretty new at this also but from what I have read, most of the ribbon snakes have been caught, not bought. I am sure there are some exceptions though.

You may want to get something deeper for your ribbons snakes since they are mostly found near water. I just used a large tupperware bowl about 1/4 full. It is placed in a ten gallon tank. That is where my red striped ribbon eats also. I would post a pic of the set-up but I have no idea how to do this. I only see a place to type a url for an image location instead of uploading....

I own a western ribbon as well, not sure of the sex though. I bought mine at a pet store, I now work there, 8 years ago. I'm pretty sure it's captive bred. My setup consists of a layer of soil, then moss, an arched branch to climb on, and a couple of places to hide, (peice of flat bark), and some live plants, just big bean sprouts and live moss. I keep it fairly moist, ribbons like fairly high humidity. Remember, if you get anything from outside to put in your setup, make sure you thoroughly clean it. I usually nuke or bake anything I bring in from outside. About 350 for 10-15 min.
