Good one, I like at night when my imitator tank fogs up, and then they walk across the glass. Little tracks....

Well, I was told by the guy I recieved it from, that it is a giant orange. It does appear to have less coloration, but as most of us tinc people know, tincs patterns/colorations are ever developing into adulthood. Maybe it will turn out with more orange, maybe it won't. The orange coloration is much darker than that picture suggests...the frog is beautiful!

Bill - everthing I have every heard about the Giant Orange Tincs have pointed to the fact this is a cross that got on the market by a carless person at the Cincy Zoo. What info do you have regarding the frog's linage?

Melissa,

I have heard this as well and don't really know what to think of the issue. I have heard from people that they are a true morph from French Guiana near Regina. Others say that they are cross. I have seen the 2 'giant orange' at the Cincy Zoo and they are very pretty frogs (I think they are housed in the insect exhibit). I got the pleasure of visiting the zoo last year when they had the Frogs! exhibit and saw alot of nice stuff including A. zeteki. They also had a nice group of azureus on display as well as tincs, auratus, leucs and bicolors. Too bad it's not a permanent exhibit or at least annual. I'll dig around and see if I can get any lineage information on this frog and see what's up. Thanks!

Any idea if the frogs thing will be back this year. I also drove to Cin to see it. Very cool stuff...

There is a form of Giant Orange which is a cross and was released from the balitmore zoo, at least that is what I have heard. The curator crossed the true giant orange morph with a regina. The two frogs look very similar and actually occur very very close to one another as in only a few miles but there are subtle differences. If you want to see just how close the two morphs looks please visit Sean Stewards site. The curator of the exibit spotted the mistake and most of those frog have been removed from the blodlines but who knows there could be a few still floating around. Also this what I have gathered from hear say so I don't know how muhc of it is true and what parts are made up as I don't think anyone has published an article, statement, or essay on the actual incident.

Thanks

I think the story I heard was that the Giant Orange morph was a cross between a Regina & a Citronella. The frog supposedly came out of the Cincinnati Zoo. The stories I have heard all seem to be similar and I have had some reliable sources verify them.

Amazing how many stories are out there.

Hopefully someday, someone will publish the real story.

If the Giant Orange were not a naturally occuring morph, how could it breed true? Presumably, if the frog were a hybrid of two different morphs, wouldn't the offspring be completely heterogeneous?

I wouldn't think so, but my genetics are not up high on my list of skills. If I remember correctly, it would depend upon the frogs bred and what are dominant characteristics.

It is a common belief that many of the morphs are closely related and are seperated by geographical differences.

Are there any snake gurus lurking around?

Well here is why I asked. I acquried a trio of these frogs that look very similar and was told that they were Weygodlt. But after looking around for a picture of a Weygodlt I found this info about them www.tropical-experience.nl/tinctorius/moreinfo/Weygoldt.html and as you can see they look nothing like that. The trio that I have (2.1) is now about 8 months old and they are not going to look anything close to that. From the above page if you hit the back button it will take you to the morph page and tells a brief description of the Weygodlt. From there it talks about a Morph called Oranje Gebergate or "Montejo" www.tropical-experience.nl/tinctorius/moreinfo/Oranjegebergte.htmlthat is sometimes called Weygodlt. Now this info is coming from Europe so who is to say which side of the pond is right. Now to continue with the confusion if you go to Sean Stewarts site and look in his gallery he has this frog and calls it a Weygodlt. www.herpetologic.net/images/frogs/large/D. Tinc - Morphh001.jpg. So can someone please set me straight on what I am dealing with here. When these frogs start producing for me I would like to be able to tell the buyer what they really are. Sorry for the long post and hopefully not to much confusing.

FalconBlade Dec 03, 2003 11:11 PM

I sent this picture to Sean S. earlier and he responded that it did appear to be a giant orange but one with less coloration which is common in alot of tincs morphs. So, I guess I'll let this issue rest for now and settle on it being a GO. Thanks everyone for your input and comments! Awesome little froglet and very bold. I have him housed with a citronella froglet which is also pretty bold and nicely colored.

You might try contacting the breeder you purchased the frogs from and see if you can find out their 'history'.
