Two Vents in a Pod . . .

Homer1 Dec 03, 2003 06:29 AM

Here are two of the 4 vents that I picked up from Quality Captives over the weekend at the Indy Show. They are incredibly beautiful, and it seems like they grow right before your eyes. I swear they have grown in just the 3 days I have had them . . . maybe I'm just hallucinating.

Anyway, thanks Sarah and Melissa! I love the metallic gold sheen they have!

Thanks Homer...these guys do seem to grow before your eyes.

It was really nice speaking to you and your sister at the show. I do hope she is feeling better.

no hallucinations there man!! They grow very very rapidly. Mine grow to 3/4 size in a matter of a couple of months! Great pics!! I have a nice group that were obtained from the ladies at Quality Captives as well and they have produced like crazy!

Thanks, everyone. I love these little guys. They are quite bold, and have a personality all their own. I love the golden shimmer they have. I'm just really impressed . . . and I never thought that I would be interested in the thumbnail species. Well, I guess this just shows that this hobby is an addiction.

And Bill, you're definitely part of the problem. Between your pics of vents, and Sarah and Melissa's bad influence, I just HAD TO HAVE some vents. Now I'm going to HAVE to buy some of those new brom's Ken is selling just to outfit my new terrarium (okay, so I have enough to make up a new terrarium, but don't tell my secret . . . I need a good excuse).

Homer - if you think those are bold, you should check out intermedius. I have had my hand (arm) in the tank, and the males will call!!! They ARE my favorite thumbnail.

Consider yourself on the list....

Thank you!!!!

How do you like that acrylic tank you picked up? Have you thought about what you are going to use for the drain yet?

I want to use ours soon, but am debating what the best drain/bulkhead solution will be.

The tank is definitely nice. I even have a friend that might want to get a similar setup for his wife for Christmas. I'm not a big fan of using the external sump (especially since this one will go on top of our dresser), so I'll probably just run the pump cord through the hole (yes, I'll have to cut the cord and re-attach it to the plug) and use a false bottom setup on this one. Of course, I'll plug the remainder of the opening with some silicone to make it waterproof.

I also plan on placing some mosquito net over the misting hole at the top, or else converting it to a feeding hole with a cover of some sort. I kind of wish that the vent holes had been drilled in the top around the edges of the walls. However, those are all nit-picky complaints . . . and it's a REALLY nice setup . . . especially for the money!

I'm going to PM you with some questions about frog availability. Watch for it!

Before you go and cover up all those holds (the 1/2 in in the top and back) I need to talk with you.

I will be picking something up this weekend you might find helpful...a misting nozzle attachment for a pressure sprayer. It will be similar to what is on this page http://www.barrs.com/mistpric.htm . We are thinking of just setting it up to a drain, maybe with an on/off setting.

Homer - your feedback is very important on those cages. We have been speaking with the guy who produces them for months and what he is building now are prototypes. Your feedback is very important!

Adam and I spoke to him at the show, and the next design will have an open hole in the top...2-3 inches and will not have the small holes on the sides. We will then cover up the holes. Hopefully in the next month of so we will be done with the design. Let us know if you think of anything else.

Ideally, the top should completely open and lock shut, or the opening on the side should be larger to allow use of larger limbs, plants, etc. during setup. Other than that, the placement of the vent holes, and the drain, I can't think of what would make this better. It's a straight-up great tank as is.

I was considering the pressure tank mister setup myself, but I also like waterfall features as well. I really haven't completely made up my mind on how to set it up . . . those were just my initial thoughts. I'm definitely going to build an oak base and matching hood. I'm not sure whether I'm even going to use a background this time . . . just a nice piece of wood or a stair-stepped substrate with rocks. I'm still mulling it over. Are you getting the nozzles from barrs? Count me in.
