Frozen Foods

Chuck420 Dec 03, 2003 12:01 PM

hi i would first like to say thanks for all the help you guys have given me i really do appreciate it...i just had a few more questions...would frozen food be better to feed it then live food ? because ive heard of rats/mice attacking snakes back and then the snake will not eat it and becomes the food but what if u were to like stun the mouse before putting it in the feeding container type thing with the snake? do you think the snake could still get hurt if it did not take action fast enough? because the last thing i want is for my snake to get hurt, and i will listen to your advice so if you think that frozen food is better then i will start doin that cuz like i said its my first snake and i am not sure what would be best for it yet.i plan to get many more snakes tho atleast another corn and i plan on getting a red tail boa if i can find one if not an albino python i will be putting some pictures of my Corn eating soon so you guys can check em if u want shes a really nice lookin snake...anyway thanks alot for the help guys and girls hahaha PEACE

Frozen foods are definitaly better. Not only is it safer, but it can be healthier too. You can also by in bulk, so it is cheaper in the long run.-smokey

Frozen is better than fresh killed. The freezer will kill any parasites that may be on or in the mouse.

I think the biggest issue is convience to you. If you have a freezer full of mice you will be able to feed when ever it is best for you (or the snake). If you have to wait till you get a chance to hit the pet store to pick up a mouse every week it may not get done.

Big step from a corn to a boa or burmese python.Boa's get big,Pythons get huge.I would chat with the guys in either forum before purchasing either.I have some guyana redtails and there about 7 feet and when they decide to have a bad moment when im handling them it can get scarey....Paul.

I agree with Wade and Paul. Frozen is a lot more convenient. Like Wade said if you have a supply on hand your snakes will get fed on your schedule, not the pet store's. There is nothing more frustrating than needing to feed and the store is out of what you need. I still throw them a live one every now and then just to remind them that they can hunt for their food. I really think they enjoy the hunt. It usually last about two seconds. As far as the mouse hurting the snake, as long as you watch the snake and don't leave in with the mouse to long it should be ok. If the snake isn't interested take it out. Never leave a snake with a live mouse over night. As far as Boas, They eat need alot bigger prey. I feed my Pythons and Boas rats, Now your talking a rodent that can do some damage. Always keep an eye on things and you should be OK Enjoy your knew baby and keep us posted. Jim

Yeah, frozen/thawed is really your best bet all around. And if you do feed live, make sure that anything bigger than a pinky or fuzzy is fed under close supervision. Shouldn't just toss in a live adult mouse and walk away. But a bag of frozen right there in your freezer when you need them is the best. Good luck with this one and your future snakes. Duffy

Definately frozen/thawed. I feed mine F/T and have had no problems with them eating them. If they show no interest I just wiggle it alittle and they usually go for it. It is also more 'convenient' to be able to go to the freezer to get a mouse then rush to the store at the last minute.
