Timmy almost gave me a heartattack!

AzLunchbox Dec 03, 2003 12:14 PM

geeeez last night was crazy.
The lights had been out for an hour or two...and i decided to go check on my lizards.....Jimmmy (My Bearded Dragon) was sleeping peacfully like usual.

Then i go to look in timmys (The Collard Lizard) Cage.....and i don't see him!......he's not in his usual spot...he's not in one of the corners....nowhere......hmmmm i'm confused at this point.

So i reach in and start carefully moving his rocks.......nope.....not under any of them.......no dig burrows to be seen anywhere......ok by now i'm panicing thinking he got out somehow.......

Then i finally pic up his waterbowl.....which was flat on the ground with no indications of digging around it.
but there he is! smashed up under his bowl.....compleatly flat.

heh.....talk about releived....and also very surprised....but yeah.....just thought i'd share.

Oh and for those of you who like helping people.....same problem as before.....Timmy is STILL barely eating....but he doesn't look scrawny YET.....i dunno.....i'm still worried about him.

Oh and is anyone going to the arizona reptile expo in Phoenix this weekend? I'll HOPEFULLY be there.

Sounds like Timmy may be trying to brumate and just slowing with his appetite. I'm glad ya found him safe and sound, little stinker, LOL.

As far as the reptile show, boy I would love to go, love to be in Arizona too, BUT.... I'm on the East coast, don't think I'll make it, ahhhahhahhhahaha ! Tell me about it, Eve

....mention something you probably already know, and that would be:
If his bowl is pretty heavy, you might want to ensure it is completely "down" against the floor of his enclosure, not setting up on top of the sand or substrate, and this goes double for any heavy rocks in his tank. As you see, they can (and will) tunnel under anything, and can undermine a heavy object by digging under it and having it settle down on top of them, resulting in a "squish". This will totally void your lizards warranty!

the fact that Timmy is attempting to seek shelter under his "waterbowl" in the first place is probably a sign that he is not being provided with an adequate hidespot in his enclosure. All collared lizards need a place in which they feel safe to retreat each night!! I frequently use a piece of slate or tile for this purpose, positioned at or near sand level firmly on top of two or more well-grounded bricks or rocks. My lizards routinely burrow under these flat slabs each night, sometimes enclosing the "entrance" with sand...apparently just for good measure! LOL
