Super Worms...part of a no cricket diet?

kurt18 Dec 03, 2003 02:17 PM

I know alot of people like the silkworms but are superworms ok to use instead. My little guy has been on Rep-Cal and salads so far and is doing well. He isn't very big, maybe a 4 inch body. Also, where is a good place to get super's? I have found them a few places but they dont offer sizes. Any help would be great

Even though supers have a softer shell than mealies, I wouldn't give them yet. As you may know beardies are real aggressive eaters when it comes to bugs and the worms are big (sometimes 1 & 1/2 inches long) and if not chewed well, could cause impaction problems. I would probably wait for a while to give them if you give them at all. If he is used to a "no live prey" diet, and is eating well, I would leave it that way. Just make sure you supplement with vitamins on his greens every other day.

Hope this helps,
Dawn

If your only going to use them sparingly as treats or for the protein part of the diet, and not a lot of them daily they are ok. In your case the dragon is rather small for superworms. Superworms look like large meal worms, and do have a hard outer shell slightly softer then the mealies. There is only one place I know that sells superworms in sizes and that is www.superwormfarm.com. For your dragon at that size I would feed the small ones. If your looking for a worm to feed to him daily silk worms would be the better choice as they are easier to digest with the softer bodies.

I just bought 100 silkworms and was really excited about them till I read about their care. They sound like a pain to keep, plus their food seems like it can get pricey. I would try to breed them but I am a full time college student so I dont have alot of extra time. After i use up the 100 i hope he will be big enough that i can use superworms. I hear they should grow quick at this age...

if you can't find smaller ones, you can tear them in half - your beardie should still go for it.
