Qs on introduction of new frog to tank

shopaholic Dec 03, 2003 04:00 PM

Hi folks:

1. how long do we quarrantine a new Juvi dart before introduction into a tank with an exisisting frog?

2. What is the size differential that is acceptable before one can place a juvi male Colbalt into a tank with a near adult female Colbalt? The female is about 9-11 months old. The juvi is 5-6 months old. They'll both be older by how ever long the quarrantine will be when they meet.

3. Are there any good ways of introduction? How can we help them do a froggy handshake and make sure no one will kill(maybe the word should be pick-on) the other? I wouldn't be as worried about this if the male was older and calling already, but I wonder what the female might do to a smaller Juvi male. Tank is a 26 Gal bowfront w/ multiple hiding places, Moderately planted(I will increase planting), H2O Fall, Small water resevoir. Any thoughts?

Thanks-Maggie

Hey Maggie, hows it going?

I would say a month for adequate quarantine (some say 3 but I think thats overkill) for each new frog. You can also use your best judgment during this period; how well is he/she eating, do they seem active enough, ect, ect.

I wouldnt worry about introducing the juvi to the adult female because from my experiecne, cobalt tincs are very docile and seem to give each other equal chance to catch their fare share of flies as long as there are plenty to hunt. Just give the new one an adequate quarantine period and it should do fine.

There isnt much you can do to increase "socialability" between new introductions because most frogs just arent like that. The best thing you can do like you said is to have plenty of hide spots to make each frog feel secure and a fair amout of plant life. Im sure you will do fine.

On a personal note, I guess this means you got the male you were looking for. Did you end up getting the one off the frognet classifides?

Hi there David! Hey are you going to the IrBa show in Pomona next weekend? I wonder if there will be a lot of amphibian stuff to see. Yeah, on Frognet there was someone offering a male that had been from parents of some of Patrick's frogs. I'm waiting for his reply-so not a done deal yet, and I can't get it shipped till its warmer. Thanks for the reply on the quarrantine time. I just get scared of the male being younger and my female is soooooo robust and I've been told that some females will be rather domineering with even males when they aren't yet old enough to call yet! If the contact doesn't end up selling to me, I will still be interested in your frogs this spring. It'd be great to meet you and personally see all your wonderful set ups! Hey, I might be interested in your mantellas anyways. Take care, Maggie

I want to go to the show but if I do, it will be on Sunday becase my friend's having a Christmas party on Saturday. I wasnt too impressed with the show I went to a few months ago; they didnt have squat for frogs. But Ill be hoping for more this time if I do go. I think it would be cool to meet you too, Ill let you know if Ill be at the show or not sometime before the week is up. Talk to you soon.
