not good

chimbakka Dec 03, 2003 05:09 PM

Orion's not doing so well. She didn't eat last week, and I thought she was going to lay. Then she ate one superworm, and spent a few days hiding in her tree partway down the cage. She looked a little dehydrated so I gave her some pedialite and upped her water intake. Friday she looked a little better and ate three waxworms, so I didn't take her to the vet. Friday night I found three whole gooey undigested waxworms on her shelf. Ugh.
Monday I took her to the vet. He gave her a calcium shot and oxytocin a few times over the day. Kept her overnight... no eggs. Tuesday, ditto... no eggs. This morning she got a c-section. They removed 24 eggs. I have them at home right now. They aren't BRIGHT white, but they aren't really yellowy either... Hrm. I'm not sure how her xrays went, I forgot to ask. Last time (beginning of Nov) they said her boned looked fine and "well mineralized". I was also told that during the c-section there was a part of her bowel that was black, probably from having the circulation cut off by the eggs. That would explain the vomitting. He gave her something to help it, and is going to poke her iwth a needle and check if it's getting better by tomorrow afternoon (she's staying there again). If not.. well, I don't know... I'm just glad I got her in there... At least this way she has a chance. he said it could also have happened if she was chilled. I told him that the night temp in my room (where she is) is lowered to about 70-72 for night time. I was under the impression that this was good... He said that it may have been too cold for her, and that it should be around 78-80 at night. I don't know... I don't know what I did wrong@!! There were also some fatty deposits (I think that's what he said) in her liver. Probably from her not eating during the first part and the last week he said. It doesn't look too bad, but not great either. So I guess we'll just have to wait to see.
I cried when I went to visit her and get the eggs today. She is sedated to keep her from getting stressed during recovery. Her colour is ok, but her eyes are dark and sunken in. Poor thing!!! It was sad...

Ohhh, Lindsay - I am sorry to hear this. You have worked so hard to make everything right - and it still might be! It sounds like you have a vet that cares (I'm curious about that night time temp, though. It gets even cooler where Luna is.)

Hopefully you will get some good news tomorrow - just remember, you can only be a good Mom if you keep yourself healthy so try not to fret too much and get a good night's sleep.

I will be thinking of you

aw thankyou
I'm eating a muffin right now.. it's been hard to eat today.
I'm going to finish my laundry, and go to bed early. Then tomorrow I'm taking the day off school (i've been working all week so I could use a few hours to myself anyway) and have a looong hot shower, then I'm going to meditate on Orion getting better, and call the vet.
I have my fingers crossed....
Thanks for your concern!!! It helps me feel better... I'm sitting at home all alone right now, and it is not fun!

I hear ya...everyone was here for me when I had all my problems with Makeda, Kaiya and Bart (my leaf trio) last summer - it was a big help to get those cyber hugs!! So here is one for you from me and one for Orion from Luna!

Don't second guess yourself! There may not have been anything you did to cause an egg pressing on her intestine. This could happen to any cham anywhere. I think your nighttime temps were just fine BTW. I'm holding good thoughts for you and Orion!

Lindsay,

We will keep you and Orion in our thoughts.
We have been through this too - and know it is tough.

Lindsay,

I'm so sorry to hear about Orion!
I know I don't post much lately...but I do read every day. I've been following along hoping to see a post from you that Orion has layed her eggs, and you were on your way to being a cham grandma (cham-ma?).

I often think about how when Zoe and Orion were both so sick last year, and we both struggled to get our babies well again. I have a special place in my heart for Orion because of that. She has fought one long hard battle in the past...so we know she is strong, and a real fighter. I hope she continues to show that fighting spirit, and gets well soon.

My thoughts are with you and "little Orion" (for some reason that is always how I think of her).
*Hugs* from me and Zoe.
