new drinking habits

kdollva Dec 03, 2003 05:49 PM

i've been bathing my dragon for the longest time now. just recently - hes calmed down in the water and actually seems to enjoy it. another new thing that he has been doing is sticking his head halfway underwater and starts to drink. even though its amusing and really cute, i almost feel bad as if hes not getting enough water durning the day. i always keep fresh water in his water bowl but i have never witnessed him drinking from it....even though he does like to step in it a lot i know this is normal behavor but is it normal for them to stick their heads underwater? also - how often should i "water" him? thanks guys!

beardies usually cant recognize standing water as actually being water. its usually pretty pointless giving them a water bowl. the baths are good, or you can mist him every day. theyll happily drink the water off their snouts, or a puddle they can see movement in from the mist

In Dino's enclosure I have a drinking bowl. It has a cup on top that empties into the reservoir. One day I put an ice cube on top of the cup, and the melting water ran down the side of the cup into the reservoir, creating a tiny splash. This got his attention. He now drinks out of it, never had to use the ice cube again. I also mix a little water in with his greens everyday, along with the moistened RepCal juvie pellets. You can see the water cup in the backround.

enclosure. As it runs down they lap it up! Most dragons I've had (especially hatchlings) drink more this way than direct mist on their bodies. In my experience at least.
