strange hard swelling

saz Dec 03, 2003 05:51 PM

Today, while cleaning my adult male veiled chams cage I noticed he has a swelling near the cloaca. The hard 3/4 inch long and 1/2 inch wide swelling starts near the cloaca opening and extends 3/4 inches toward the tip of the tail. This swelling does not protrude out of the cloaca - it is completely under the skin. He has been a little neglected (little food/water) due to the tragic loss of our dog 3 weeks ago. I am going to call a vet on Sat. to get him in but am looking for ideas. I do not believe that this could be constipation due to the little neglect because the feces would probably be backed up toward the front part of the cham. not extend toward the tail tip. He is not breeding and is not kept with any other chameleons. He is eating and accepting water. He is slightly dehydrated. Any thoughts? Thanks.

How old is he? Is it not his "hemipenal bulge?" You said adult male, but it sounds just like the bulge every male veled or panther gets at around 5 or so months of age. I don't suppose his voice is getting deeper LOL.

My cham is close to 7 or more years old. I have had him for 5 of that. He has never had this before. That is why I am questioning this. The hemipenis buldge is evident in the pictures on this web site. This is NOT the problem.

Thanks.

Perhaps if you could take a picture of the area, we could determine if there is an unusual problem.

Honest... you certainly would have noticed the hemipenal bulge if you have had him that long. So if this is something new - perhaps a vet visit is in order.

The only thing (organ) in that vicinity IS the hemipenes, and the bones of the tail. If he has unusual swelling, it could be a problem.

He's a pretty old guy. It could be a cyst, a tumor, abcess. I'd check with a vet. I'm glad to see you've had him that long!
