Gravid... Really Gravid.. Help! Lots o` pics.

Karu Jun 02, 2003 09:08 AM

My female laid her last clutch on 4/30/2003 and has yet to lay her second clutch. She is very very gravid but is not laying. I am wondering if she is egg bound. I forget how long is the normal time between clutches. I think it's something like 20 days. Here it is 33 days later and no eggs. Also, I see a blue dot about the size of the dime on her stomach, typical of crypto. Can this be seen on gravid females aswell? I have no clue how she would have caught crypto. I've had her ever since she was a month old and never had any problems with her. I keep the cage extremely clean and everything she needs is available to her. Any ideas on this?

Here are some pics of it.. In some you can see what I'm talking about but in others, it's not present.

I'm going to assume that the clutch laid on 4-30 was her first. I've heard of, and experienced, time between clutchs as short as 14 days to as long as 6 weeks. The blue dot is one of her organs, you can see this in most geckos, think it may be the liver but I'm not 100% sure. She appears healthy in the pics but it wouldn't be a bad idea to give her a couple of drops of liquid calcium.

Hope this helps,

It appears that she is bound, judging by the two eggs that are riding high on her abdominal wall and the appearance of additional eggs. Good Pics. Here is a link to a previous article I wrote on egg binding.

I read on your binding post and the post in the thread that 5-6 weeks is still considered normal. Should I wait till then to call a vet or should I get in ASAP? I'm kinda pressed for cash right now and the extra few weeks would help me get it. But if I had to, I think I could get the money together. Around how much would the standard procedure for egg binding run me at most vets?

Thanks for all your help.

Leos can take longer to lay, especially if temps are low. I would give it to the sixth week if necessary. Initial visit, x-ray and oxcytocin should run $75 - $100 depending on the vet. If not treated, typically, your leo will expire shortly after eight to nine weeks after deposition date. Some hold out longer than others, but that is my experiences with bound females. I can make out at least three eggs from your photos. You'll notice, on what would be your geckos right side, how far up near the chest cavity the placement of the egg is. You can clearly see the high placement of both eggs in your third picture from the top. The other eggs are not as visible due to the fact that a calcified shell has possibly not formed. Of the two eggs you can clearly see, one will eventually flip and take a horizontal position to her abdomen due to the increase in size of the new eggs. I hope this helps and keep us posted.
