Questions about Orange head roaches and Discoids..

jusmebabe Dec 03, 2003 07:09 PM

I need to get some Orange heads. I won't need them for a few months for feeders (pair of panther chameleons).
How many adults should i start with in order to get a colony started?
Of the species which is more productive.
I just wanted opinions of those who own them.
Thanx

hi there,

The non-glass climbers are significantly slower at reproducing than the glass climbing lobsters. For discoids and orangeheads, I would recommend you starting off with a bunch, because it will take a while to build up a colony which would support you feeding off adults everyday. Even if you have only two individuals; the four or so roaches that it just ate took about three months to reach that size. I can't give you an exact number to start out with; I would just tell you to get a messload of them; different sizes, to start your colony. I acquired a bunch of the non-climbers, and I am finding that I need more to get larger colonies going, where they'll be ready to feed out asap. I also keep lobsters, and might I say, damn, those things are crazy. It is a crazy exponential explosion. I started out with about two thousand or so three months ago, and now I must have close to ten thousand plus!! I wish that the non climbers were more like this. Of all the non climbers I keep(discoids, deathheads, orangeheads, and orange spot, I would have to say that the discoids are the faster of them all. I think that I am going to get a bunch more of them, and focus primarily on getting them up to par in as short a time as possible...I've got a lot of hungry monitors...and I do mean hungry.. Hope this helps,

bob

OH, the number you start out with also depends on how patient you are... i believe you said you wanted to have them to feed out in a couple of months, so I would start NOW.. and start out with a bunch; you can always sell off anything left over; but I think you won't have that problem for a while with the non glass climbers.. I'll buy some off of you(discoids)...

Funny thing, everytime i start to click sned money via paypal I freeze. Something about spending 80.00 for roaches i guess lol.
Anyway about lobsters are they a pain? I hear they breed like crazy but they're fast. The upside they are alot cheaper than the above mentioned.
If you don't mind can you email me and let me know where you got your oranges? I'm comparing prices "You know don't wanna pay to much" (commercial).
