All criticisms welcom on my new setup

frogger88 Dec 03, 2003 08:21 PM

I completed this tank a few weeks ago. My only issue with the tank is the plant that I attached to the bacgroud. I didnt take all of your advice and for the sake of time did not wrap the roots of the plants in moss, hence th reason they have all died! =(

The gaps on the background were filled in when i first attached the plants, and are again visible.

This is still a work in progress, so any adivce is appreciated, thanks!

I like it. How did you get the moss on the wood, and does it seem like it is going to live?

yea did you just put it on top of the wood? Also how did you cover up tose vents in your tank? I have two oceanic tanks I got from a friend and wondered if you have to order those caps off the web site to keep it water tight.

The only vents that are coverd are the ones behind the background. The rest of the vents i leave open for ventilation. I had to call oceanic direct to get the vent covers because they do not have the vents listed on there pricelist.

All i did was just place most of the moss on the wood. OVer time it should root itself to the wood. A couple of pieces i had to staple onto the wood to get it to stay where i wanted it. It seems as though it is going to live!

Hey frogger,
In my opinion, most bromeliads (at very least the neo. species) dont need moss wrapped around their roots provided that they are constantly watered (the neos I have in my hexagon vivarium are not covered at all and they have rooted very strongly with 10 short mists per day) But since that looks like a viresia species in your tank, I can see why it died if it didnt have any substrate for the roots to derive water and nutreitns from. From what I have learned over the years, neogrelias are more epyphitic than most other bromeliads (other than tillsandias) which is another great trait of them for the rainforest vivarium.

What I would do for the background problem your having is fill the gaps with great stuff expanding foam then cover the foam with a mix of concrete primer or weldbond and peat moss and coco-fiber (bedabeast eco earth ect) because from my experience, that method kicks ass. Another method you could consider witch I know several people on this board have done is pump any gap with silicone and while its still wet, stick a bunch of moss over it. I think the concrete primer method looks more realistic and is cheaper, but hey, its just me. Good luck with your tank, it looks very promising. Talk to you later.
