Satiny Parrot Snake

Conrad Feb 08, 2003 10:06 PM

Well, seeing as there isn't a "Other Colubrids" forum yet, I'll ask my question here. I have a pair of Satiny parrot snakes, that I have had for about a year now. I was wondering if anyone has ever captive bred these wonderful creatures, of if anyone has any tips that my be of assistance for my future attempts. I didn't breed them this year frankly because my male didn't start eating untill a little over a month ago! But now he's a machine, just like my female. Well, if anyone has any info that may be of assistance, please let me know. Thanks.

Where'd ya get 'em?

you are in the right place because all the parrot snakes are rearfanged and not merely other

I acquired them from Mark Lucas a little over a year ago. I know they are rear-fanged, but don't consider them "venomous" rear-fanged, unless I was an anole or a house gecko. I've taken a couple of good tags with absolutely no affects, which suprised even me a little, considering that their fangs are pretty decent in length. I am hoping to be getting a breading out of them but need to know if there are any little "tricks" out there that may be specific to this snake. Such as with some snakes not needing to be truly hibernated, just taken off feed, or increasing/decreasing the humidity level.

I've read that parrot snakes have been misidentified as being rear fanged. They are not. Just look inside their mouths.

Depends on your definition of "rear-fanged". If you give the name on the merits of elongated rear teeth or "fangs" then they are rear-fanged, as my pair have notably elongated rear teeth(fangs). If you give the "rear-fanged" merit to the potentcy of venom, then clearly they are not to be cosidered. And while all this is important in taxonomy and definition of the species, it has very little to do with my questions of breeding experiences and or tips on breeding my pair. If anyone would like to speak one to one about my experiences with the species, you are more than welcome to e-mail me or begin a new post. Thanks for all the interest though!
