Danger Of UTH's Question

ginny23 Dec 03, 2003 08:53 PM

Hi..I currently have my geckos in a tank on top of a desk but due to christmas decorations i have to move it to the floor until the end of the month. My floors are all carpeted so I took the undertank heater off bc i was afraid of starting a fire. My question is....will my geckos be ok without it for the month or does anyone have an idea that they know is safe. Thanks.

I think he needs the heat. Especially given the old "hot air rises and cold air sinks" principle.

If you can raise the tank an inch or so off the ground, then running the UTH will be no problem.

any ideas on what i can use to raise the tank minus the obvious like a book or something?

Just get a couple pieces of 2x4 wood the length of your tank and put one on either side. This should be enough hieght to let air flow freely under the tank. If you have real squishy carpets, use 4x4's instead. Both of these can be found at any hardware store.

I just put the UTH in the tank, burried into the substrate. If you don't use substrate, you can wrap it in a few layers of paper towel. The glass won't crack that way, the UTH won't be too hot for the animal, and you'll be able to use it

*buried, btw

I don't know if there are any disadvantages to this method, but I've used it for a good amount of time without problems and you can always do the other method if it worries you
