Hi Aimee,

My Cresties jump everywhere! Whenever I hold them, they tend to want to jump away. I usually just humor them and let them jump from hand to hand. My adult male has been the only one to sucessfully escape me and jump to the floor - but I was sitting so he was only anout 3 feet off the ground, and he was fine. Oddly enough, my juvies seem to jump less than my adults. But don't take my experiences as the norm - I only have 4 cresties and have had them for about 2 weeks, so I'm really no expert.

how do you make them jump from hand to hand? i would think that it'd be hard to know where they're gonna jump next - hehe~ do they jump really slow? and if they jump away from you... do they run and try to hide somewhere?

i'm just wondering because i plan to get a crested gecko this summer, but a friend of mine said they jump i just don't want her to get lost! hehe~ he said - just get a gargoyle gecko... but i like cresties hehe

thanks lovelyleopards!

They aren't that jumpy - although they do like to leap. I usually point them toward my body - I've had them leap right on my face and hang on to my glasses.

I swear you can watch there eyes, and they seem to get wider right when they jump - I know their eyes are wide open (no lids) but it just seems that you can see it in the eyes.

You can hand walk them - let them walk from backhand to backhand - sort of like a tread mill - and they get used to handling.

Don't let the jumping dissuade you - cresteds are extremely handeable animals - and a delight to work with.

thanks monte! i always thought you worked with leos!

but it was funny hearing how they jumped on your glasses and just hung on them... hehe!

i thought the idea of them jumping WOULD dissuade me, but after a while, i've been thinkin' that i REALLY want one... i've been doing all the research i could on husbandry and care - and i'll continue to do so until this summer

do YOU sell cresties?

. . .go to "giantgeckos.com" and purchase the "Rhac Book". It's has a ton of info on husbandry, breeding and the coolest pictures ever. It's expensive (40 bucks) but worth it. The best herp book I've bought yet.

Although I've owned crested and aurics for 2 years, this will be my first year breeding. I have 2.2 breeding pairs and 4 juvies. I'm looking forward to it. If you want to purchase some cresties - check out "giantgeckos.com" - I just purchased a partial pinstripe from Philippe DeVosjoli that is an absolute screamer. Plus there are numerouis other guys, like the Sandfire dragon Ranch, ,Crested Geckos, etc, that are all good.

I still breed leos - in fact, all my colonies are together at this moment. I think I'm rushing the season - but I hear tails vibrating all the time, so something must be going on.

thanks for the reference to the book. i'll be sure to put it on my xmas wish list i'll be browsing that website you gave after i'm done posting here..

so this is your 1st year breeding cresteds huh? congrats i'm always trying to find the cheapest ones coz i don't plan to breed for example, i got my leopard gecko for free when she was 5 months old - i love the lil girl but i don't plan to de-virginize her.. hehe i was going to get a crested with a fallen off tail for $29.99 from LLLReptile, but then someone said PetCo is going to start selling for $35... i didn't even hear that til today - so i'm waiting

so all your leos are shakin' those tails, huh? that's so cute all your "fru frus" hehe - i know what it means coz i read your convos before in the leo boards, but how did you even think or begin to start calling them that? lol

It's hard to explain if you haven't handled one... it's more like one nice deliberate leap. They aren't like wild jumpy or anything. And when they jump away, they generally land and just sit for a minute. They aren't terribly fast at all. Don't let the jumping bother you... like Monte said, they're such cool little geckos . You'll get used to handling them super fast - just always watch their tails, from what I understand they drop their tails rather easily. One cool thing that I couldn't quite picture until I handled one is that the very tip of their tails has an adhesive pad on it like their feet. And their tails are prehensile, so when they jump onto things they hang on with their tails. Really neat. Anyway, good luck getting your new crestie, you'll love him/her!

aimee_s Dec 04, 2003 04:58 PM

Yeah i'm still trying to picture what the adhesive pad on the tail would look like I know that they drop their tails a little more easily than a leopard gecko, but I don't mind it - i'm actually wondering if I should start off with a knob-tailed crested! they're cute either way, so i won't hate mine if it fell off

When i read up on cresteds, I remember seeing "frog-like" - so I assumed they just kept jumping all over the place. I just don't want him to land in a weird position and get hurt (or lost) - i'm really excited to get one!! thanks for your help!

They aren't really hard to handle, with really nervous ones we keep them closer to the floor in case they decide to go for a dive.

they usually just jump on your shirt or to the next hand...they are excellent for accuracy. After a while you get the gist of how they move....you won't have much trouble.

I've had my cresties (one male and two babies) for about three months. I think that after watchin them some time you can guess quite well when and where they are going to jump.
I haven't yet had the courage to let them come out of their boxes because I'm scared they would get lost in my room. Anyway they aren't even very tame. The male eats from my fingers and barely tolerates touching. The babies are wild, I'm still trying to get them eat when my hand is close (I put babyfood in a spoon and offer it to them) but haven't succeeded yet. Well, I don't really care if they won't became as tame as they could, I'm really lazy handling even my leopardgeckos. It is more fun watching them in their terrarium.

I have a youngster and at first i was nervous about the jumpiness but then I learned how to read body language. I wouldnt worry about it. My guy only jumps when he knows he can make it. When I see him lock on to his target I redirect his attention to my other hand. For me its no problem at all. I love cresties so much that when he/she is older I plan to take on my first breeding venture. my mom is still a little nervous handling him but the more you do the easier it gets. Good luck.

Oh and i also have no problem feeding him. When he sees his baby food on my finger or anywhere he laps it right up. He prefers baby food rather than the t-rex stuff so I mix in some turkey baby food with the peach baby food for protein and add some vitamins. He also likes bugs.
