Papuan Enclosures

zx7trev Dec 04, 2003 12:07 PM

All,

Have in the last few months aquired a WC/LTC Male about 5 feet, and a baby Female Papuan. They are both dong great and feeding well. I wanted to ask those of you who have more experiance with these anumals than me, what you prefer to keep them in, and what sort of furniture. I have read that they like to climb, but they do well in low height cages regardless. Also, I live in South Florida where the humidity is already pretty high, is a humid hide box still mandatory type item?

Thanks all!

S~

a large hide box that they tend to push around the enclosure to where ever they want it. I have a large water bowl with a wide base so they don't tip it over all the time. When they need to they seem to go into the bowl to provide the humidity they want. I also keep my snake room humidity pretty high anyway. I don't have any branches for climbing but I'm SURE if provided they would take advantage of that since they climb along the ridges of the vision tanks all the time. I use newspaper as substrate. Hope this answers some of your questions. Frank Kincade.

I currently have mine in a 4ft. Neo, that she has pretty much outgrown. I increased the floor space by installing a wide plastic shelf- not permanently, it rests on a broad rectangular water bowl and a hide box. (For hide boxes I prefer opaque tupperware/rubbermaid style boxes, with lids. This greatly eases cage extractions- basically a trap box without a locking door. If I want, I can take her out, clean the cage, and never even disturb her. I did use flower-pots, but she quickly outgrew them, and they looked rather ridiculous, perched atop her after a meal.)
Once she gets a little larger, I have a 6'9" X 36" X 36" enclosure. It is a monster cage, because it sits on a huge metal frame with iron wheels (the original builder had a lot scrap metal) and thus stands a total of 54" off the floor. (The dimensions above are the internal dimensions.) Inside this, I have have made a 60" long, 14" high, "ledge" from different bits of vivarium wood to make greater use of the vertical space. I would be just as happy with a commercially available cage with less vertical space- its more a matter of finding a use for this enclosure than me thinking it is the perfect fit. Inside this I will have a large water dish of some variety, and at least two hides. I do offer her a minimal humidity hide- the same sort of tupperware, but with a thin layer of sphagnum across the bottom, because I have to use a convective heater in the snake room, which destroys the RH. With this she has always had clean sheds. She probably would without it- they show a remarkable ability to "take care of themselves."
I heat it both her current neo, and the larger enclosure with a 75 Watt and a 180 watt heat panel, respectively.
I use newspaper, as I do for all my snakes.
Thats pretty long-winded, but so it goes. Good luck with them and share some pictures if you have a chance!
