Introducing snakes/breeding question

Amanda E Dec 04, 2003 12:16 PM

I know it's not breeding season yet, but that's why I have this queston.

I recently read that if a female snake is crawling away from a male snake's advances, then even though she doesn't look it, she really is ready to breed or else she wouldn't be putting off pheromones that would get the male excited. Does this seem to be the consensus of you breeders out there?

I'm especially curious about this because I introduced an adult male and a yearling female together just for the fun of it, to see what they would think of each other. She had no interest in him, but he was all over her, following her every move and constantly flicking his tongue. The thing is that it's December, not spring time, and she is far from being the recommended size for breeding (she's only 150 grams).

Would the male's interest just be merely curiosity at a new snake? I've introduced him to snakes before but never got this reaction.

A willing male will try with any female, even if she is not ready. Just the males nature. It's usually the female that is the key to breeding.
