Parasite ID: MY turn

Colchicine Dec 04, 2003 12:31 PM

I have always been jealous of the people that post their pictures on here for identification. I rarely have time for fecal floats but did one today.

This is what I believe to be a Fluke Ova, going by the color guide by Klingenberg. In the guide, the ova have numerous granular green parts to it, which was not captured in these photos. I found numerous of these things, taken from an adult Black Rat Snake. This picture was taken at 400x, with a digital camera held up to the eye piece.

This time, an E. Box turtle, at 100x. I realize this may be nothing, but the spikes are similar to the illustrations I see of flukes, so I thought I would post it. Don't mind the air bubbles!

If you have the Klingenberg color guide to parasites, you see on the back several examples of pseudoparasites, mostly plant materials from herbivorous reptiles. This shot happens to look exactly like the plant material pictured in the guide.

I would say that 1 and 2 are Oxyurid ova. Fluke eggs have a solitary operculum at one end of the ova. 3 and 4 are pseudoparasites.

Would ID 3,4 as Strongyle - I've found Oxyurid (pinworm) ova to be more elongated. Would still treat with fenbendazole. Would agree 3,4 = false .

Don't know if you'll see this but my vet agreed with your evaluation. Thanks!
