Cloudy eye that looks ulcerated?

NikkiT Dec 04, 2003 12:46 PM

Hi,

Its been a long long time since I've posted here. My apologies for absence, but its been quite a mad couple of years for me.

Anyway, I have 3 Leopard Geckos.. Oscar, Perkin and Pootle.

Over the past 48 hours I noticed that Perkin hadn't been looking quite right. She seemed doped and was licking her face alot. But she hadn't lost weight so I thought everything was OK. Perkin never became hand tamed, and handling her always stressed her out terribly, so I decided not to handle her. All I could see was that her left eye was being kept half closed.
Anyway, about 30 minutes ago, I heard a commotion in the viv behind my head (housing Perkin and Pootle) and I could see that Perkin seemed to be having a fit. I quickly picked her up and held her in my hands, gently stroking her and talking to her.
Unfortunately, about 5 minutes later she died. She has released her bowels during the fit it seems, and the discharge was bright orange.

Anyway, not wanting to leave Pootle in there (she's brain damaged so not "quite all there", and not knowing what else to do with her, I put her in with Oscar (who is actually female it turned out. I know this is not a sensible idea, but I was panicked).. Oscar did the tail waving and sniffing, so I picked her up "for a chat" (its been a couple of weeks since I've been able to bring her out) and I noticed that one of her eyes looks strange. Its cloudy, much bluer in the light, and at the bottom there looks like what could be a small ulcer. She's also lost a little weight (but that could be due to winter, they do normally lose a little during winter months).
I'm now really really worried abour Oscar. I'm going to call the vet first thing tomorrow morning, and see when the first time I can see their reptile specialist is.. I hope its tomorrow.

But does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this?? About 3 months ago I changed my supplier of meal worms, and I have noticed that the new ones seem to be of a lower quality than older ones.. could this be the problem??

I feel so guilty tonight.

Nikki x

That's too bad about your gecko. Does the one with the eye issue shed well? Sometimes the gecko won't shed well around the eyelids and this skin gets built up in the eyes. You can moisten the eye area with a q tip and see if there is any shed skin left inside.

yeah.. is a bit of a week over here.

Oscar has a vets appointment for tomorrow morning.. Just been out and bought him (OK, her, but its habit) a hot water bottle to keep him warm on the journey (I don't have a car, so its three trains and a bus to get to the reptile guy where he is tomorrow)

I've currently got Oscar in a very humid mini-viv (his travel box).. 5mm of warm water on 5 layers of kitchen paper ontop of a hotwater bottle.. I'll leave him there for 30 mins to soften any skin left from a shed, and then will q-tip his eye very gently.
He does seem more alert today though, but that could be just because he is hating being in the "bath"!

I think he might have lost more weight than I orginally thought though.. his tail is looking alot thinner.

I hope he will be OK.

Nikki
