BRB won't eat!

Suntzu18 Dec 04, 2003 02:48 PM

Hey gang....I have a small BRB I got from the Atlanta show....I currently have him in a 48"x24"x6" rubbermaid container. I have a human heating pad on one end (underneath tank) with newspaper as substrate throughout and moss on one end. He also has hiding place and bowl. Humidity stays 85-90% with temp at about 75 degrees or so. I have had him a week and a half. The dealer said he was eating fuzzies fine, but the fuzzies at the show were a bit too large, so I got him pinkies and was going to feed him those for a month or so. I let them thaw at room temp for an hour plus then put them in the container. They (three of them) have been there two days and the snake does not pay any attention to them. I have even moved the snake near the fod, and he still does nothing....any suggestions?

I dont have too much experience with BRB's since i've only had mine for about 4 months. But when i first got my female baby BRB she wouldn't eat the dead fuzzy so i tried a live one and she took it just fine.

Suntzu,
. Have a look at some of the other posts here on the forum about little BRBs that will not eat. It is no wonder that yours is not eating. You have recently had it way too hot and you are feeding mice way smaller than it prefers. A newborn baby BRB can eat a jumbo mouse if it wants to. A small adult live mouse is it's most prefered meal. You did not say whether the dealer was feeding dead or live but if the snake has never eaten dead before it is too much to expect it to take dead as it's first meal in a new home. Even if it had been eating dead you will get a stronger feeding response feeding it live small adult mice. After it has become acclimated and is comfortable in it's new home and has eaten live meals for several weeks it can be switched to dead food.

Brian,
Wait one to two days after your snake sheds (babies shed every 3-4 weeks) and offer a live rat pinkie (mouse pinkies too small) by putting it directly in front of your snakes hide entrance at night. Leave it alone until the morning and if it has'nt eaten, take it out and freeze it for later (after switching to F/T). Try the same thing again in a few days. Eventually it should eat. Feed live for about three feedings then feed him two rat pinks, the first being live the second F/T (I went directly to F/T on their 3rd feeding and they all ate but one, but giving a live first should definitly work). Definitly go with a smaller rubbermaid (shoe box size) for the first few months, then transfer to the bigger container and then to the big melamine cage.
Good luck,
Paul
