Experienced Leopard Tortoise Breeders EMERGENCY Question

matortoise Dec 04, 2003 04:17 PM

I just recently purchased 2 adult leopard tortoises. I just goet home and the female has laid 2 eggs (at least that we found so far.) They were not in any nest, one in the yard and one near the nesting area. The female has not exhibited signs of trying to nest, so I havn't thought of getting an incubator yet. I won't be able to get one set up until tomorrow.

Any Ideas on what to do until then?
I have carefully placed the eggs (without rotating them) in a small container of sand and dirt mixture. I have htem near a heat source of about 82 deg. I don't know what is best to do though until tomorrow.
If I keep them at that temp should it be ok, should I worry about humidity (it is about 78% in miami)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have some great instructions for making an incubator, any additional help would be awesome.
thanks
matt

So far you have done the right thing. Try not to disturb them too much and set them up the incubator when you get it. You can worry about the humidity later when you get more stable.
I would say that she certainly has more eggs (my female's smallest clutch was 10 eggs) so provide a nesting site if you can.
Look at the bright side.......at least you KNOW you have a female now!
