misting concerns

rc_racer_007 Jun 02, 2003 11:08 AM

hi i just aded the soil to my tank so right now all i need to do is get my repti-glo lights from reptiledepot and plants in a few weeks.

so i tested my misting system out in my tank today. my system works perfectly but the mist is escaping through the lid. if the fan is on the mist wont come through it but it seems the mist comes through the cracks even faster. (they arent really cracks just maybe 1/16 opening where the lid meets the tank).

im afraid after a while this will warp my canopy i made. is there any way to fix this?

also he shortest time period will allow is a little over 30 minutes. is 30 minutes of misting to much? how often a day should i mist a day with this set up?

last question, should i leave my fans off or on while i mist?

thanks

30 min is the lowest it will go? Who's mister are you using most people I know that use them (I don't have one yet ) have them on for a few mins at a time 30 min seems a bit much.

You might want to switch to digital. Home depot sells a digital timer for 20 bucks that you can program it down to the minute. I have a misting system in my tank. My original set-up i misted every 3 hours for 2 minutes. It was great for keeping the humidity up. After a few months I found my plants where suffering from root rot. I now only mist 1 minute a day and setup a fogger in their water pool.

Ya, you will need a digital then. The lowest setting I have seen on the Manual ones is 15 minutes, which is still way too much. I only turn my mister on for 2 minutes at a time, so digital is essential. They run about $10 at Wal mart. Well worth it.

I would it be easer and you have way less problems if you hit radio shack right they have them on clearance

ok thanks for the answer to the first part about the digi timer.

now, what about the mist that is leaking from the top of my tank? is there some sort of a gasket i could buy/make to keep the lid from leaking mist? i was thinking weather stripping but i dont think it would hold up after a while.

also do you keep your fans on while you mist?

I have used weatherstripping in all of my tanks with no problems. It is manufactured to be durable and used in frequently changing wet and dry conditions. Just make sure all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly when you first stick it on, and get good quality weatherstripping.

take three

thanks the weather stripping fixed it!

ok i think im going to mist around 1-2 minutes every three hours and see how humidity act there.

question, do you all mist at night? or just during the day?
