outdoor enclosure

janome Dec 04, 2003 06:06 PM

I have a jungle carpet, 2 corns and a milk. I would like to house them outside for a little bit (an hour or so) so they can get some sunshine. What type/kind of enclosure would be good to house them in so they can get some fresh air and sun?? Or would this not be a good idea...

P.S. I live in the Phoenix, Az area so it doesn't get that cold in the winter..

I too am interested to hear what others say. I've always wondered if it were possible to make some kind of 'playhouse' for your pet snakes to hang out in when it's warmer outside.

there are some cages made of a metal frame with all of the sides made from heavy screen.i believe that they are marketed for chamaelons.
if your handy then there is no reason you couldn't make your own.think about it.a cage is just a glass/plastic/melamine/wood/screen box.try making a frame from wood or pvc.cover it with plastic screen or plastic hardware cloth.make a door.voila!
on the other hand, outside herps can be easy meat for cats, dogs, racoons, neighbor brats, fire ants,& etc.

I was wondering if the Reptariums would work:

I thought during the warmer months it might be nice to spend the day outside on the back deck and rotate the snakes in the cage while I sit out and read, etc. That way I can be sure they are safe. Only thing is I imagine I'd have to clean and disinfect between each snake? I'd of course put in some climbing & basking stuff.

Couple things to think about with this. I used to house my iguana outside all summer as the temps allowed in Upstate NY. But the last couple of years I haven't and here is why.

The ig really seemed to benefit from the sunlight....cool. But snakes won't nearly as much...so that isn't really the point.
The ig came back in each fall and got demited. Yes, it was always covered in mites and I would get my vet to ivermect it...as that was the simplest. And this ig was in a cage NOT readily available to outside animals.
You have to monitor temps very closely. Even if you are only going for an hour or something a day....make sure it is at temps the snake has been at and wants to get. That means finding a good range area with shade etc and on days the wind is not as much a factor.
You also gotta consider predators....neighborhood cats etc.
With some folks that have had adeno viruses strike the monitors they kept outside I had a talk with my vet. He didn't know if herps could get West Nile virus or some of the others and after we talked we really thought that the benefits (even for a UV needing herp) were not worth the risks.
Just thoughts.
