Dirt Dec 04, 2003 06:29 PM

Saw a pair advertised in classifieds...also read that they are some of the most curios/calm larger goannas out there. Does anyone have any experience w this unique lizard??

I have some young ones and I think they are the coolest of the cool.
They need a large water container as well as a substrate that allows them to burrow. Their housing requirements make them a little more challenging than other species, but well worth the effort.
One of my top 5 favorite species.

Hey frank,

how do you have your adult mertens set up? How big of a water basin/area do you supply them? Do you give them more land or water? tanks a bunch,

bob

In the summer, I believe the tank is three feet by four feet and 18 inches deep. In the winter, its about three feet by two feet and 8 inches deep. Thats for adults.

I wish i would have made it bigger, as the value of this species is its special use of water. Like having a reptile seal. Frank

Why don't you put them in your swimming pool? If you put all your Mertens in there maybe they would tag team that damn heron.

i remember seeing your mertens at the daytona show. they struck me as having the most expressive eyes i've ever seen in a reptile. i know that sounds sentimental, but they really do have this strange thing about them that seems to set them apart from every other monitor i've seen.
