beardie hiding too much?

quanno Jun 02, 2003 11:25 AM

One of my 16 month old female beardies has a tendancy to hide. Before, in her old enclosure, she would hide as much as she could... hiding her back under something with her head and hind legs sticking out. Now, she has this exo-terra cave i got them, they seemed to like it in the store so i put it in their new home. A week after being in their new home, she discovered the cave. and will hide in there for days at a time. I havent fed her while shes in there, i just take her out, then drop some crix in or give them veggies. Is she hiding too much? if its cool enough in there, will she try to brumate? so confused!

She could be trying to brumate. What are your cage temps (basking spot and cool side)? Also, when do your lights turn on and off? Are you offering a good source of UVB?

I have a one and a half year old beardie that has been brumating on and off since November. The cage temps are just fine and he comes out to eat a few times a week, but he loves to climb in his cave and stay there most of the day. I'm hoping to take him outside in the sun as soon as the weather warms up. This will hopefully "wake him up" because it's not winter anymore! This behavior can be very frustrating!

Excessive hiding can be a sign of illness or stress. Are there any larger dragons that she can see? Is she sharing her cage with another dragon? Is there something else that could be scaring her? Big dragons tend to intimidate little dragons into hiding and not feeding. Is your dragon eating well? Does she look healthy?

well... shes sharing the cage with her sister whom shes lived with all her life. it is a new home (about 3 weeks old) but she didnt show any signs of stress or anything.. just one day she discovered this cave and shes been hiding ever since. Shes larger than her sister so i dont think thats a problem. She may be brumating, or trying to. I took her out to hold her for a bit and she seemed normal..... i guess shes just enjoying hiding since she has something big enough to fit in now :-P
