Worried..

Khalliaar Dec 04, 2003 07:18 PM

I'm worried about my little guy. He is 6 months old and from what I have heard way under weight. He only weighs about 230 grams. He is active, his temp and humidity are fine and I am trying not to underfeed him. Last feeding I offered him 4 small adult mice. He only ate 2. The total weight of the 4 mice was about 60 grams. I'm very worried and would like some advice on this. He is acting totally normally.

now you got me worried ! mines about 6 months old and i only feed him once every 4 or 5 days a large hopper ! ! ! but he seems fine also.

You have nothing to worry about. Your snake is normal size. His eating is also normal. At six months he has good average size. You are to used to seeing weights posted here that are way above normal. In most cases due to over feeding. There are yearlings that grow faster the average. Without seeing your snake I would say he is in fine shape. Enjoy him.

I think you're both fine too. Some people like to powerfeed and rush the increase in weight.

Ok now I wonder about mine: I have two that are just under 6 months and I weighed them in last week at 324g for the male and 344 for the female. They don't seem fat and I only give them each one rat pup every 5-7 days. The female is definately robust but I thought she was supposed to be and the male is quite svelte.I don't especially want to breed them or anything I just keep them for the pleasure of thier company. Here's a picture of them a couple months ago as well. Opinions?

your snakes seem totally fine & pretty to boot. I have a girl that's a year & a couple months & she's like 600 or so grams. I havent had her on a pump schedule but i choose to fed her a small rat a week or a med rat every 2 weeks...& it's true most people have big weight because for breeding purposes pump feeding makes them ready to breed quicker.. saving some years to get back your investment. personally i say you should feed small rats once a week or week & a half. but that's just what i like. as far as feeding rat pups when i was at proexotics.com they stated that it's better to feed mice or rats that are older & have hair because their bones are more developed giving them greater calcium levels..they said rat pups are more equivalent to a stick of butter...more fat less good stuff..it sounds like it makes sense but it's your animal so do what you like..lol....keep it up they look great
