Skin Problem? (pics)

jared1981 Dec 04, 2003 08:06 PM

On my bearded dragon there seems to be some kind of weird white texture on her skin above her nose. I took a few pics, and hope that someone here can maybe tell me what it is. It doesn't seem to bother her, and it actually has happened before but then cleared up after a week or so. Her skin usually peels where it is at, so I just assumed it was her shedding. But this time it seems to stick out more than usual, and I am starting to wonder if it is a problem. Any ideas?

Thanks!

It looks like it might be some sort of fungus. What kind of fungus I don't know.

I was afraid it might be fungus. Does anyone know if fungus appears then disappears and reappears again? Because there have been other spots in the past, but they usually peel off in a week or so and then everything looks normal again. Is that typical of fungus?

Yes, that is one of the signs that some fungal infections are noted for, they are usually considered some of the minor fungus problem as what you are seeing shed off is dead skin, but the fungus is under the scales.

Althought I have never seen a white one, I do not that there is one, a researcher I have emailed with a lot mentioned it one time, let me search through my old emails and locate it.

But, when I first looked at this, I thought it looks like a poor shed area...... then again, it would not hurt to do a test area and see if it reacts to antifungal cremes.

I do suggest you discuss this with a vet and have him look at the dragon.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like a bad shed. If your dragon has a history of bad sheds, you may want to raise the humidity in the hide box a little bit (not too much).

If you've got a blacklight around, lots of herp funguses will phophoresce green under a blacklight. It wouldn't rule out a fungus if you didnt see it, but you'd be sure if you did see green.

If it looks bad to you its generally a good bet to take it to the vet.

Hope that helps
