With this talk of Tums...

Solaris16 Dec 04, 2003 08:11 PM

...I'm starting to look at them as a serious possibility as a calcium supplement. I live an hour away from anywhere that would carry calcium supplements, in a little village with a population less than 500 people, but we do however have a drug store that carries tums!

However, tums are an antacid, couldn't that be a harmful addition to an iguanas diet?

I'd love to hear from people who use tums as an additional calcium source in their iguanas diets, or from people who are opposed to the idea before I make my decision!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Wendy

I have used them for many years. They have really been a good option for me. I have dealt with many a case of MBD with them and seen more rapid improvement than with regular calcium. I do know that milk of magnesia is another human option that is used to help bind phosphorus so it passes with out being digested, perhaps there is a bit of that with the tums as well. I have an iguana that is 11-14 years old this month (rescue that was somewhere between 3-5 years of age) that is still alive and kicking even tho she was fed dog food, crix, mice and monkey chow on top of ice burg salad mix before she came to live with me. Another thing is they are cheaper than the cal powder. And also since most people use tums in their regular lives, they dont sit around for as long as most cal supplements so they tend to stay fresh.

My vet recommends them She said they are 100% calcium
carbonate. Sure enough when I checked the bottle she was
right.
