New Baby- Problems

teachbio Dec 04, 2003 08:27 PM

My new baby amel (had it about 2 weeks) regurgitated a pinky today. It was his second meal since I've had him, the first one stayed down just fine. I handled him a little the day after he ate, but only briefly to clean up his mess. His stools also seem to be kind of runny. Problem is, he's my first snake, so I'm not exactly sure what snake poop should look like. Otherwise seems healthy, out exploring, drinking water, etc. I know to wait at least a week to feed him again. Do you think it was the handling, or should I be concerned about the poop situation? He has a heater under his tank, so he should be warm enough.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,

It sounds like you may have handled him too soon. Usually, you should wait at least 48 hours to handle the snake after feeding it. As far as the feces, they normally are runny. Let us know how it goes.

You should check the temperature in your snakes enclosure. The only time I had a problem with my snakes regurgitating was when I moved them to a new spot in my home and the temps were not stable (too cool). If a snake is not in the right temp zone, it will naturally/instinctively regurge to prevent the food from simply rotting inside of them since they can't digest at lower temperatures.

Not to rule anything out but it could be a parasite or some other illness that could cause them to regurge too but doubtful if you got your corn from a good breeder (and there is not any real way to tell except getting a fecal exam done at a vet).

I briefly handle my corns before/after feedings when moving them around BUT never for extended period of time so I would not know if it really causes them to regurge...but I can't imagine how it would unless you are moving them around vigorously to cause such stress.

Let us know how things turn out!

I think maybe he is getting ready to shed. His colors are looking dull. The eyes don't look cloudy yet. Will the eyes look blue in an albino? Maybe the stress of shedding caused the regurge... He also was hiding/laying around a lot yesterday. Again, I think he's going to shed. I hope he's getting ready to shed and is not sick!

My albino's eyes don't cloud prior to shed, so that is a possiblity. What is the temp inside the enclosure?

Yes they will. My amel female corn gets dull, then her eyes turn cloudy and so does the rest of her body. She's like this for a few days then clears up...then finally she'll shed. It can take up to 2 weeks from start to finish for mine to shed.
