Guess who's home??

chimbakka Dec 04, 2003 09:16 PM

Orion's home!! YAY!!
They said that it's a micacle that she's even alive at all. They said that her insides were black. She ate some food today. They gave me a can of high cal cat food or something for her to mix with water. I'm going to get some silkies on the weekend and use their guts for food.
After I got her home she ate a TON. I sprayed her and she climbed up and hung from one foot and starten laping at the glass. I thought she was going to go through it! Then she ate a ton. she had at least six eyedroppers of the food mixed with pedialite, then another six of water. I have the mv bulb on her and a 60W halogen light. The temp is nice and high, and i'm going to monitor it at night to make sure it isn't too cold for her. I ALSO got a new filter for her warmmist humdifier, and sterilized the whole humdifier. AND I got a small fan to mount to her light fixture. It can go all day, and has just enough breeze to move the air around without making it cold.
AND I found out that the bill is only $260 CANADIAN!!! I was expecting a LOT more. So, I'm in a good mood!! The filter was only 10 and the fan 6, and the bulb 5... all those were less than i thought too.
They said at the vet not to be too shocked if she passes on this week, but she shouldn't even be alive as it is. So... i have my fingers crossed!!!

Glad to hear she's doing well! It is indeed a miracle that she is still alive. As ffragile as chameleons are, it's a miracle that any of them can be cut open and sewn back together. Sounds like she's doing great! If she's eating and drinking she should recover nicely.

I was practically CHEERING when I was reading your post...then I got to the last line. It was like letting the air out of a balloon...I felt so deflated.

I always thought the first 24-48 hours to be the critical point. I guess it must be a little different with reptiles maybe.

I guess for Orion though, the big test will be when she has her first bowel movement. Make sure you let us know when that happens! I'm guessing that would be a very positive sign that things are working well inside.

Your vet bill was very resonable, in my opinion anyway! I can remember all my trips to the vet with Zoe...and just for office visits, and medication my bills added up to quite a bit...so $265 doesn't seem too much for what they've done for Orion.

Do you think you should try the repta-aide? It is specifically designed for insect eating animals. I wonder about giving her the cat food.
Or maybe even the silkie innards mixed with repta-aide?
(UGH...anything to avoid making bug juice again, eh!? I do NOT miss those days!)

Well...make sure you give us regular updates on your little girl.

Oh, and Zoe sends his love, and get well wishes, to Orion.

I know what you mean about deflated... I'm in a limbo right now. I'm SOOO happy she's here... but I have to be "prepared" for if she does pass. (I don't think she will though ).
I'm going to get the repiaide today. I was thinking the same thing about the cat food... I found a new way for bug juice too. I put the crix and everything in a little plastic cup and mush it with a plastic spoon. the blender never kills them.. and legs EVERYWHERE is just too gross... eww..
When she finally poos i should frame it!! lol I'll be ESTATIC. Then I won't be as apprehensive b/c that would mean her bowels are ok.
My teachers are going to kill me. I stayed home yesterday getting all of her things ready and sterilized for when she would be home, b/c i had to work in the afternoon. Now i'm staying home today to get repiaide, new multivitamins, crix and all that stuff, plus i have to feed her lots. i work 1-9 so i don't have to worry about peeking in too much. I"ll take care of the food and meds this afternoon and give her the night to rest.
:D it is a good day!!

Well I haven't done this in a while, but I'll say a prayer for Orion. Great news she's home, and with such a positive start. I wish her well -

Good for her! Great to hear! Between you and me, I would be very leery of the catfood as it is very high in proteins. Did you find the recipe for "bug juice" on www.adcham.com? It may be much easier for her to process. Getting the silkies innards is good too. I would be a bit careful about how much she eats...smaller meals more often. It will be easier on her sore insides. Let her drink and drink. That is amazing!

The catfood they gave you is probably AD diet. They gave that to my beardies but I still prefer Repta-Aid for chams. What I like about it is that you can mix it up extra runny for a very sick animal and thicken it by adding less water as they get better. AD diet is super rich and tends to give diarreah. It may be hard on her system. especially since her insides were black. I would read the ingredients of Repta-aid to your vet over the phone to see if they will ok that instead.
I hope she makes it!
